Heisman Race

Over the last few weeks the Heisman race has also turned into complete chaos (in addition to the BCS). As of right now, there are only two players that should be locks for New York City.

Case Keenum and Kellen Moore. I give you these two names because they have played their very best, Houston hasn’t lost and Kellen Moore wasn’t the reason Boise St lost – he put his team in the position to win the game.

There is a lot of hype for Brandon Weeden, however he made key mistakes that cost his team a game against Iowa St last week. His overall numbers are fantastic, but he also has the best WR in football and that might cause voters to look at him and ask “how good is he?” The answer is very good and most likely deserves to be in NYC.

BCS Ready for Implosion?

Will the BCS remember the weekend of November 18th and 19th as the day their system died? As Oklahoma St, Oregon, Oklahoma and Clemson all lost, it through the BCS into complete chaos. I am all for chaos, however not the kind of chaos that we may see unfold. I want to see two teams play in the national championship game that deserve to be there. And by deserve to be there, I mean win your conference or at least play for your conference title.

The system that the major conferences set up for themselves to make them money is two games away from the nightmare it never thought it would have to see. If LSU loses to Arkansas on Friday, LSU will not be playing in the SEC title game. They will in fact, by looking at the tiebreaker, be 3rd or 4th place in their conference. That’s where part 2 of the BCS nightmare begins. If Arkansas beats LSU and Alabama beats Auburn this weekend, the BCS will be upset but the college football fans will be happy as they are one game away from seeing the system ruined.

College Football Week 10: The Showdown

November 4, 2011 College No Comments

So here we are now in week 10 of the college football season. Some of those undefeated teams have faltered and at least another one will this weekend and we will be down to at most 5 undefeated teams.  The last couple of weeks have been wild, exciting and unpredictable and I am hoping the same continues for the last month of the season. Let’s take a look at where the teams currently stand in the BCS and where I have them ranked: … Continue Reading

Week 7 College Football Picks and Top 15

So after last week’s picks I am 22-11 (SU) and 18-13-1 (ATS), which isn’t bad. Everything is on the positive side of things. This week I will pick 10 games. Why you ask? So I can look like a fool. But since I am picking 10 games I will just give you the pick and score, no logic behind it:

Navy at Rutgers (-4) (Saturday, 2:00 PM ET)

Pick: Rutgers 31 Navy 24

Clemson (-7 1/2) at Maryland (Saturday, 7:00 PM ET)

Pick: Clemson 34 Maryland 21

Week 6 College Football Picks and Top 15

So far through 5 weeks, I am 17-10 (SU) and 15-10-1 (ATS). The SU record should be better but BYU had a lucky comeback, Navy misses an extra point after a bogus penalty and Texas A&M completes a collapse for a 2nd straight week. The bottom line is you really don’t know what to expect with college football. Never walk away from a game at halftime, because all hell can break loose. With that in mind, I think we might return to some sanity in Week 6, but if we don’t at least we will all be entertained:

Boise State (-20 1/2) @ Fresno State (Friday, 9:00 PM ET)

Boise State comes into the game against Fresno having given its poorest effort of the year and Kellen Moore looked shaky. This game is in primetime however and Boise’s last chance to show a national audience what they are about. I expect their defense to be flying around and Kellen Moore to return to his 75% completion percentage. Sorry Fresno.

Pick: Boise State 49 Fresno State 24

College Football Week 5: Quick Hits

  • I mentioned in last week’s quick hits that Kellen Moore might be more hurt than he and the Boise staff are letting on. Well, against Nevada he didn’t look very good as he threw for only 142 yards and 2 TD’s. Maybe he is hurt, or maybe that was his bad game for the season and the rest of the teams on Boise’s schedule should be nervous.
  • Alabama and LSU are great teams, but maybe, just maybe the rest of the SEC isn’t very good this year.
  • Clemson is good and they will only get better by the end of the season. But that doesn’t mean they will go undefeated.
  • I told everyone Wisconsin was good before the season started, now the national media is catching up to me.
  • Baylor’s RGIII looked like he was going to do it again, putting up absurd numbers. Win the game and the Heisman talk gets louder and then he finally made a mistake and threw an INT. It resulted in Kansas State holding on for the 1 point victory.

Week 5 College Football Preview: Clemson, VA Tech Clash in Blacksburg

So after last week’s games I am now 15-6 (SU) and 11-8-1 (ATS). Because the SU record includes picking a few underdogs as outright winners, I definitely need to improve against the spread. So here goes with this week’s games:

Utah State (+7 1/2) @ BYU (Friday, 8:00 PM ET)

Utah State isn’t getting any respect here. Their defense hasn’t allowed a run over 15 yards all season and BYU can’t score. So I am really not sure how BYU’s offense can win by more than a TD, if they win at all.
Pick: Utah State 27 BYU 21

Air Force @ Navy (-3 1/2) (Saturday, 12:00 PM ET)
Navy, last time they played, lost to South Carolina by a FG and have now had two weeks to prepare for Air Force and get them at home. Ride the Mids.

Pick: Navy 28 Air Force 20

BumpAndRun.com’s College Football Top 15 — Week 4

Here is your top 15 for this week, where I finally give LSU their due. Oklahoma State makes a move, their state rival takes a drop and Clemson and Nebraska break into the rankings. Another good set of games is on tap for this weekend:

15. Texas A&M (2-1)
14. Va Tech (4-0)
13. TCU (3-1)
12. Nebraska (4-0)
11. South Carolina (4-0)
10. Stanford (3-0)
9. Clemson (4-0)
8. Baylor (3-0)
7. Oregon (3-1)
6. Oklahoma (3-0)
5. Alabama (4-0)
4. Boise State (3-0)
3. Wisconsin (4-0)
2. Oklahoma State (4-0)
1. LSU (4-0)

College Football Week 4: Quick Hits

  • LSU showed they can score a little bit on offense, but their big play defense and special teams helped shut the door on West Va.
  • Arkansas showed its not ready for top-notch competition as their O-line is too young.
  • Oklahoma State proved how explosive they are after basically only showing up for half the game against Texas A&M and squeaking out a victory on the road.
  • Is Kellen Moore’s knee hurt more than he and the Broncos are letting on?? Played with a knee brace and barely played at all in the 2nd half against Tulsa.
  • Clemson and Wisconsin are pretty good aren’t they? Should be interesting battles this week with Va Tech and Nebraska on their respective schedules.

Week 4 College Football Preview: From Tuscaloosa to College Station, It’s BCS Make or Break Weekend

Last week was not a very good week for me. It didn’t help that most teams decided to play ugly football, but through three weeks my overall records are 12-5 (SU) and 9-6-1 (ATS). This week I am going to examine closely some high-profile match-ups that everyone will be watching:

Florida State @ Clemson (-2) (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET, ESPN)

Florida State comes into the game after the tough home loss to Oklahoma. Their starting QB EJ Manuel looks like he will be a game-time decision. Clint Trickett played well in relief of Manuel, so that isn’t a major issue for them. What is a big concern are two things: the Noles have lost 4 straight games in Death Valley, and the Clemson offense is legit.

Clemson is led by sophomore QB Tajh Boyd, who has looked very good so far this season. The Tigers are riding high after they came from behind to win by two touchdowns against the defending champs. Not only does Clemson have a passing attack that can scare you but they have an even better running game with Andre Ellington. Florida State is going to have to focus first on stuffing him and try to make Boyd beat them alone.

With the questions surrounding Florida State at QB and other injuries to their WR’s it is hard to go with them in this one.

Pick: Clemson 34 Florida State 27
