2010 Offseason Breakdown: NFC South Needs

Throughout the month of February, Bump and Run will break down the needs of each NFL team as free agency and the draft approaches. Today, we’re breaking down the NFC South:

Atlanta Falcons: After making the playoffs in Mike Smith’s first season as head coach, the Falcons took a small step back in 2009 (though they did post back-to-back winning seasons for the first time ever). Look for GM Thomas Dimitroff to pursue a playmaker on defense to complement DE John Abraham. On offense, Matty Ice should be able to generate 20-28 points per game with what he’s got. Adding another reliable pass catcher wouldn’t hurt though. … Continue Reading

2010 Offseason Breakdown: NFC North Needs

Throughout the month of February, Bump and Run will break down the needs of each NFL team as free agency and the draft approaches. Today, we tackle the NFC North:

Chicago Bears: The Bears have some holes to fill on both sides of the ball, but getting Jay Cutler a stud WR is priority #1. New offensive coordinator Mike Martz will want to stretch the field, but he’ll need the toys to do so. On defense, plain and simple: that secondary needs a fixin’. The return of Brian Urlacher should give the linebacking corps the jolt they were lacking in 2009. … Continue Reading

The Vick List – 3 Logical Spots

2010 Offseason Breakdown: NFC East Needs

Throughout the month of February, Bump and Run will break down the needs of each NFL team as free agency and the draft approaches. Today, we dive into the NFC East:

Dallas Cowboys: Finally! The Cowpokes won a playoff game and it only took 14 years. While momentum hardly ever seems to carry over from one season to the next, Dallas is hopeful they can build on their 2009 success and parlay it into a Super Bowl appearance on their home turf. Offseason priorities include locking down WR Miles Austin, finding something, anything better than Roy Williams on the other side and adding young talent along their defensive front seven.

Key Unrestricted Free Agents: Terence Newman, CB.

Key Restricted Free Agents: Miles Austin, WR; Marcus Spears, DE.

Needs: WR, DL and OL

A-Peace

The Giants cut ties with LB Antonio Pierce this week in a bold move that signals a major overhaul for a defense in disarray.

Wow, how’s that for ‘what have you done for me lately? ‘

Question for GM Jerry Reese: is getting younger worth cutting your smartest player? A.P. has had his share of injuries, but at 31 years-old, there aren’t many players in the NFL that can match his intelligence. Plus, the guy took tremendous pride in beating the Cowboys, Eagles and Redskins. Big Blue is 21-12 against the NFC East since 2005 – the year Pierce arrived in NYC. He also led the team in tackles in Super Bowl XLII, only one of the biggest games in Giants history.

The linebacker scorned has already expressed his desire to stay in the NFC East. It makes sense – when the Redskins made the mistake of allowing Pierce to sign with the Giants in 2005, he never let them live it down. So Jerry Reese, I ask again - do you feel lucky?
