Bump and Run Players of the Week
The week of blowouts is now behind us. On the defensive side of the ball a veteran safety was up to his old tricks. On the other side of the ball, it is safe to say that a Trojan signal caller has returned to form. With that let’s get into this week’s Bump and Run Players of the Week:
Offense
Vernon Davis: The 49ers TE is finally living up to the hype, it just took him a few seasons. While it was in a losing effort and with the help of Alex Smith jump starting the offense, Davis turned in an impressive performance. Davis had 7 catches for 93 yards and 3 TD’s. Davis = 1 point.
Drew Brees: For 28 minutes on Sunday the Dolphins made Drew Brees look ordinary and then BAM! With 5 seconds left, Brees talked his coach out of kicking a field goal and called his own number for a TD to cut the Phins lead to 24-10 at half. It didn’t stop there. He added another rushing TD and threw one to Colston as part of a 4th quarter barrage. While the first half wasn’t impressive, the 2nd half is what MVP seasons are all about. Finished the game 22-38 for 298 yards and 1 TD, 2 rushing TD’s. Brees = 2 points.
Miles Austin: I have to be honest, I am not sure how this guy is putting up numbers. Sure he is fast, but he doesn’t run great routes and isn’t very physical. That being said right now he is on FIRE!! He followed up his franchise record week, with another impressive effort. He torched the Falcons secondary with 6 catches for 171 yards and 2 TD’s. Austin = 3 points.
Carson Palmer: Palmer officially has his swagger back. He made the Bears defense look flat out awful. Palmer threw for 5 TD’s, 4 of which came in the first half. He completed 20-24 passes for 233 yards and 5 TD’s. Carson Palmer welcome back. Palmer = 4 points.
Defense
Shaun Phillips: Memo to KC O-line for next time you play SD….BLOCK Shaun Phillips. Phillips helped the SD defense play to its potential, granted it was against the Chiefs. No. 95 finished with 6 tackles, all solo, and 2 sacks. Phillips = 1 point.
Calvin Pace: Pace was key to helping pitch the shutout of the Raiders on Sunday. Sure it helped that the Raiders have the worst QB’s in the league on their team. Pace had 3 sacks and 7 tackles (6 solo). Pace = 2 points.
Darren Sharper: It’s hard to explain how valuable he has been to the Saints. He is well on his way to being the NFC Defensive player of the year. Sharper had a huge INT early in the 3rd quarter and returned it for a TD to let the Dolphins know that the comeback was on. His INT’s always seem to come at the most critical times. He finished the game with 4 tackles and the pick six. Sharper = 3 points.
Keyaron Fox: He stepped up in the clutch to pick off Mr. Wrangler and return it for the game clinching TD with 1 minute remaining. Fox finished with 4 tackles on top of the pick six. Fox = 4 points.
